Approval takes 7-10 days from the day it is received in the office.

This will depend on the type of insurance you choose, the month you apply and which province you plan to practice in. Visit the New Member Application for membership fee information.

You will receive a confirmation package, which will include your insurance policy dates and NHPC ID number approximately 4-6 weeks after your payment has been processed.
If you would like to know the status of your membership prior to receiving your confirmation letter, call the NHPC office for verbal confirmation 7-10 business days from when it was received in the NHPC office.

Membership with NHPC is based on recognition of schools that provide programs on NHPC recognized modalities, or practice fields.

If your school is not on the list, it does not necessarily mean your application will be denied. Your school may not be listed because
- Currently the NHPC cannot support some schools
- Schools may be in the process of being recognized
- The school may have had a request for recognition by the NHPC
Please call the NHPC office and ask for the Credential and Research Manager to discuss your school’s program and the Credentialing recognition process.

NHPC recognizes over 60 modalities in the natural health care field. Visit Schools & Modalities on this website for a complete listing of NHPC recognized modalities.
Your modality may not be listed because:
- currently the NHPC cannot support some modalities
- modalities may be in the approval process
- modalities may have not yet had a request for recognition by the NHPC

If your training occurred outside of Canada, please be aware that there could be significant differences between Canadian standards of practise and those taught to you by your school. Please call the NHPC office to discuss your school's program and the credentialing recognition process.

If the modalities you have completed training in are recognized by the NHPC, you can include those modalities in your membership application. For modalities in which you are a student, the NHPC will not recognize you as a practitioner in those areas. When you have completed your studies, if the Association recognizes your program, please send us a copy of your certificate and we will update your files and notify the insurance provider.

No. Associate Members are non-practicing members and Associate IDs are not valid for the purposes of insurance claims.

Yes. You need to use the Associate application form. Ensure you include a copy of current course enrollment. Please note that there are specific limitations on your membership and insurance coverage as a student. As a student, you are only covered in a program-supervised clinical/practicum setting as designated by your school or training institution. For further questions, please contact the Credentials Department at the NHPC office see the New Member Application page.

Our bylaws require that you have graduated from your full program of study in order to be a regular member. Please use the Associate application form.

Liability insurance for students only covers treatments in a supervised practicum setting.

It is "slip and fall" insurance that covers you wherever you work. (ex. clients home, clinic, your home, a park, etc.).

The Medical Malpractice Liability and Commercial General Liability Insurance may cover you for your teaching duties. Please contact the NHPC Office to determine if teaching your modality is covered by insurance.

You can practice all modalities that you are trained in. However, your insurance program will only apply to those modalities that are supported by the NHPC and for which you have supplied certificate(s) of completion for a recognized program.

The full membership fee includes many NHPC supported programs, including the medical malpractice insurance program. As a practicing member you cannot opt out.

Yes, it can. It is the responsibility of your client to check with their insurance provider with respect to the coverage included in their Health Plan, or coverage under the Health Insurance billing.

Yes. The Medical Malpractice and Commercial General Liability insurance packages insure you anywhere in Canada.

Yes. Both programs are available nationally. You are covered anywhere in Canada. However, please notify the Association office so that we may update your records with current contact information. Not updating your contact information may jeopardize your insurance coverage.

No. You would need to obtain Property Insurance.

We recommend that you change to Associate (non-practicing) member status at your next renewal to maintain your number and to maintain your credentials. At the time you return to the workforce, you can apply to upgrade to regular membership.

You are required to obtain 20 Continued Competency credits every 24 months, consistent with your renewal period. You can submit proof that you’ve obtained your credits as you obtain them, or when you submit your renewal forms.

Natural Health Practitioners are considered to be working with vulnerable populations. Because of this, most jurisdictions require an criminal record check that includes the vulnerable sector search. NHPC needs to know that you have undertaken this criminal record check.

You will need to go to your local police station and ask to have a Criminal Records check with the Vulnerable Sector Search performed.

You can contact a nearby rural police department or a local RCMP office to find out if getting a CRC with vulnerable sector search through them will be faster than with your municipal police department.
If you still need to wait several weeks, then you can submit your receipt for the criminal record check with your application no more than 30 days before you are scheduled to receive the criminal record check. We can process the rest of your application at that point and your membership approval will be pending your completed criminal record check being received in our office within 30 days. If we do not receive the completed criminal record check within that 30 days, your membership will be cancelled.

We require a copy of a CRC with vulnerable sector search specifically that has been completed in the last 30 days for your application to be approved. It must be a paper copy that can be submitted to the office for our records.

The total membership fee amount is due with your application. Monthly payments are not available. Please contact our office if you wish to discuss our payment policy.

No, expired membership numbers are never re-used.

All new members that provide an email address on their application are set up with a login during the approval process. You will receive an email notification of your username and password once you are setup. The member login allows you access to special members only features of the website.
