Massage Therapy Regulation in Alberta
NHPC - One Strong Voice

NHPC has been participating in the Transitional Steering Committee (TSC), which has been given the task of developing Massage Therapy regulation for the province of Alberta.

A new member-group has been added to the TSC. The Alberta Association of Therapeutic Masseurs (AATM), represented by John Neumann. In addition to the AATM, the TSC now includes the NHPC, Massage Therapists Association of Alberta (MTAA) and the Remedial Massage Therapists Association (RMTA).

The process of regulating a profession is a slow one and the TSC continues to make progress. Recently, the Government of Alberta suggested the TSC postpone its work towards creation of a legal Society and concentrate on developing a practice statement and regulatory policies.

Each organization that is part of the TSC will now speak as one voice for their membership. What this means for the NHPC is that the association will continue its long history of seeking direct membership input (through surveys, in person meetings, online discussions, etc) on issues that directly affect the membership. NHPC members will continue to have a direct voice on this very important issue.

Members in Alberta are encouraged to attend an upcoming Connections Cafe (visit the Centre for Learning for more information on Connections Cafe dates and locations) to discuss the Alberta Massage Therapy regulation issue.

0 # Connie 2010-10-21 11:51 Hello
I am looking to join an association and have insurance coverage. I am a massage therapist and live in Manitoba. I have not been practicing for the last couple of years. Do you offer coverage in Manitoba? What would the cost be? What are the requirements re: professional development, testing, hours of experience etc?

Thank you
Connie

I was member previously but stopped working to have children in 2006. I am now interested in starting to work as a massage therapist again and was wondering what I would need to do to reactivate my membership with the AMTWP?
Thanks, Nicole

0 # Claire 2011-06-23 04:32 Hi Angie - I am so sorry we missed your note. Not sure what happened there.

Yes - you can absolutely get insurance as a student. Simply click on the "JOIN NOW" button on this website's homepage and access the Student Application Form. Once you complete school, you just need to upgrade to a Regular member. To keep your 'registration' you just need to renew your membership each year.

Thank you.

0 # Rachel Dalgetty 2010-12-03 14:04 Hello Nadine,
I was just on the connections cafe and finally found your MTCAP page on your website. Please note that from the members home page the link to the MTCAP page did not work for me!! The MTCAP page is excellent and provides all the answers I was looking for. . . was that page included in the tutorial?? If so, I must have missed it. . . if not it would be an excellent resource to let MT's know about. No need to have someone contact me. Thank you.
Rachel

0 # Claire Ashton 2011-06-23 04:36 Hi Dawn:

Our apologies for missing your note. A bit of a glitch there.

I suggest you take a look at the NHPC MTCAP program - that might provide you with what you are looking for. Visit the About Us section of this website and then click on Advocacy and then Insurance Education and Advocacy.

Thanks

0 # Sarah Graham 2011-01-13 05:28 Hi! I am currently an associate member with the NHPC. I was just wondering if I still needed to obtain credits inorder to keep my membership. I am not currently practising but do not want to lose my option of getting back into the field.

Thanks!

0 # Claire Ashton 2011-06-23 04:38 Hi Sarah: Sorry we missed your note.

Regular members are required to be compliant with the Continued Competency Program. If you move from an Associate to a Regular member you will need to be compliant with the CCP.

0 # Claire Ashton 2011-06-23 04:39 Hi Jena:

I suggest that you ask M H Vicars what their policy is on practicums as this is an educational issue. Hope that helps.

Regards,
Claire
