Alberta Blue Cross: Insurance Update for Massage Therapists

Thursday, 09 August 2012 10:04

NHPC has provided Alberta Blue Cross with a list of Massage Therapy members who meet the 2200 hours of training. Documents of qualification do not need to be provided to Alberta Blue Cross by members as this information has already been confirmed with NHPC.

The Alberta Blue Cross deadline for 2200-hour competency equivalency will be implemented in May 2013. The information of qualifying members will also be provided directly to Alberta Blue Cross at this time. No further action is required from NHPC members.

+8 # Patricia Reeves 2012-10-08 04:36 it was said that the other ins. co. wouldmost likely accept the manulife exception policy. As I meet the exception criteria for Manulife, do I still have to take the CEE for Blue Cross before May Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

+2 # Cheyenne Kean 2012-10-23 08:04 NHPC continues to negotiate with the Canadian insurance sector to create a single set of standards that will apply to all 10 unregulated jurisdictions. This way practitioners will have certainty with respect to what qualifications are required to provide services anywhere in Canada. We will continue to update our members as we progress on this issue.

0 # Laurel 2012-11-26 01:44 I heard a rumour that evenif you pass the 2200 CEE but only originally only 500 hours Manulife will not accept you anyway? True or not? Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

0 # Cheyenne Kean 2012-11-26 05:00 Hi Laurel,
The hours of training a practitioner has are not relevant to the CEE process. Any massage therapy NHPC member in good standing who successfully challenges the exam will be recognised by Manulife and other insurers. The CEE is being developed to the highest standards possible and will set the bar for such evaluation mechanisms in Canada. That is why the process has taken a bit longer than we would have liked. Ensuring the process’ universal relevance is the best way to meet the needs of NHPC members now and going forward.

0 # Kathryn 2012-11-26 04:31 Which 2200 hour criteria do they go by? I am qualified according to Sunlife, but not Manulife. How do we know about blue cross? Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

0 # Cheyenne Kean 2012-11-26 05:08 Hi Kathryn,
There’s no “2,200-hour” criteria beyond having actually completed a recognised two-year massage therapy training program. In terms of equivalence, right now Alberta Blue Cross recognises all NHPC members but will transition to the CEE process as of May 1, 2013. They will exempt some practitioners but have not yet determined whether or not they will adopt the same standards as those defined by Manulife. The same is true of Sun Life, who have yet to determine what they would consider to be worthy of exemption. As we know more, we will continue to communicate the details with our members.

0 # Maria Batanes 2013-03-13 09:05 I'm a continuing student finishing my second year at MaKami College. As what my teachers recall, since I am only 4 months away from graduating with 3000 hours, at this point I am passed 2200 but a certificate will be given saying I graduated with 3000 hours. Considering I am a continuing student, can this help me out at all with the insurance companies allowing me to be considered "2200" hours??? I can get a continuing letter of education from my school but will that do anything what so ever? Reply | Reply with quote | Quote
