Thursday, 23 August 2012 00:00

NHPC made the Competency Equivalency Exam (CEE) available to Massage Therapy Members in November 2012.

An important part of CEE development is the inter-jurisdictional competencies standard of the regulatory provinces.

CEE Key Information

Cost

  • The cost of the written and the practical together is $350 plus tax.
  • The fee includes access to a comprehensive online CEE preparatory study tool: Test Run Online.

Location

  • Participants will take both the written and oral/practical sections at test centre locations at different dates.
  • Current locations include Calgary and Edmonton; list will be updated as new locations become available.

Eligibility

  • NHPC members currently recognized by the NHPC for Massage Therapy are eligible to write the CEE.
  • Eligible members who choose to participate in the CEE will be eligible for 15 Continued Competency Credits (10 for registering on and using TRO, 5 for taking the test). CPR and First Aid requirement still need to be met.
  • As of January 2013, non-members can become a member of the NHPC and take the CEE for $525. To qualify, non-members must be a member in good standing with a current association or graduated from an NHPC recognized school. This membership lasts until the October 31st renewal deadline.

Resources

More information on the CEE will be provided as it becomes available.

+20 # Mazell Kolvyn 2012-10-11 07:26 Dear NHPC CEE,
I have just taken the testrun Pharmacology exam. These questions are appalling to have on a massage therapist exam. I do not need to know which medications are required for a specific condition as I cannot administer or recommend. These are medical questions only. We fought these questions in both BC and AB way back in 1995. These exams should be massage based only. I also do not need to know which drugs are prescription only as that is for a Pharmacist!
Thank you.

0 # Amanda Bryden 2013-04-29 04:55 Hi Cheyenne;
In regards to scheduling our exam once we've paid- Is there a minimum or maximum time limit from the day we register to the day we schedule our exam? i.e. if I pay today will I have to schedule the exam for one month from now or could I schedule for 6 months from now?

Thank you!
Amanda

0 # Yvonne Lundeen 2012-11-05 13:04 Do we know how many CEC's will be allowed for completion of the CEE?

Also, is there more specific details regarding the practical exam? Will there be any workshops offered to prepare us for this exam procedure?

0 # Cheyenne Kean 2012-11-06 03:57 Hi Yvonne,

We are providing 15 CCP credits for anyone who successfully challenges the exam; the only additional pieces you will need are the 5-credit block containing First Aid, CPR, and Ethics.

We have provided a comprehensive list of study resources in the CEE section of our website. Also, once you apply to challenge the exam, you are provided access to a sophisticated online preparatory tool that will allow unlimited practice exams and direct you to appropriate study materials to help you with areas that need work.
Hope this helps, best of luck!

0 # Yvonne Lundeen 2012-11-08 15:22 I have applied and am scheduled to write the exam and am finding the test-run online to be extremely helpful in preparation for the written portion of the exam. I also have complete copies of the study guide, resource list and inter-jurisdictioanl competency standards, but still find I am not 100% sure of what the requirements will be of us in the practical portion of the exam. What will be available to us, are we actually working on clients with conditions, or is it more oral assessment, how much is assessment and how much is treatment, are we meant to provide ongoing treatment reccomendations …my list goes on. It seems like a lot to cover in 30 minutes. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

0 # Cheyenne Kean 2012-11-09 04:36 Hello Yvonne,
More information will be available soon that will help you better understand "what to expect" for the practical exam. In the meantime, we believe the DVDs and booklet available now through our Centre for Learning will be helpful tools in preparation for the practical exam: www.nhpcanada.org/.../dvds-79

You should be very familiar with the Assessment chapter in the Clinical Massage Therapy: Understanding, Assessing, and Treating over 70 conditions available through Massage Essentials. You can find the link here: nhpcanada.org/.../...

Please watch for our CEE email updates for more information as it becomes available. Good luck!

-1 # Yvonne Lundeen 2012-12-18 15:46 Cheyenne, completed the written portion with 26 other therapists. Lots of apprehension going in, mostly regarding the delay in receiving marks back and concerned over why that was. Very diligent about what you could NOT take in (ie watches, pencils, kleenex) but once inside it was a wide open computer lab, no cubicles or barriers, and you could see everyones screen clearly. The exam supervisor was on his laptop and hard to catch his attention even when needed. The exam only had 91 questions, a cause for concern as we had specific instructions on 100 questions in 120 minutes. Overall I felt like my exam went well, but found multiple questions to be very subjective. Those were the ones I really deliberated on, I knew the subject matter, knew the answer, but felt that there were 2 equally right choices. In my opinion the exam also did not reflect the Content breakdown supplied in the CEE handbook. It seemed to be weighted heavily in Assessment and lighter in the Foundational Knowledge.
