SunLife Now Accepting MTCAP Approved Members

Sunlife is now accepting claims for NHPC MTCAP approved members, as well as resubmissions from clients retroactively to their NHPC MTCAP approval date. If you are an NHPC MTCAP approved member and have had client claims rejected, you are advised to re-submit these claims to SunLife for approval.

NHPC continues to make progress with other insurance providers and will continue to update you on progress.

If you are a massage therapist with less than 2200 formal training hours, are CCP compliant, and have about two years of clinical Massage Therapy practice, you are encouraged to apply for MTCAP approval.

To apply for MTCAP approval, review the Self-Assessment Tool and then submit a Review Application Form to the NHPC by mail or fax.

NOTE: MTCAP does not apply in provinces that have regulated Massage Therapy (BC, Ontario, Newfoundland & Labrador). In those provinces, regulatory colleges determine the standards for Massage Therapy.

If you have any questions about MTCAP, please contact us at growingtogether@nhpcanada.org or by phone at (toll free) at 1-888-711-7701.

+1 # Claire Ashton 2011-07-05 04:49 Thanaphon:

NHPC does not have a list of insurance companies that will reimburse clients for Thai massage. Rather than insurance companies, it is the different HR and benefit policies of employers that drive what gets covered by insurance companies. If you have clients that would like to have Thai massage covered as part of their benefits - ask your clients to tell their HR department that they want Thai massage covered. Hope this helps

0 # Sarah Tepper 2011-08-19 08:09 Regarding recongition from SunLife Insurance corporation for NHPC members, if we are living in BC, Sun Life will not recongize us because we don't qualify for MTCAP? Just making sure. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

0 # Nadine Noseworthy 2011-08-22 02:02 Hi Sarah, that is correct. MTCAP does not apply to provinces that have regulated Massage Therapy. So - B.C., Ontario & Newfoundland and Labrador. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

0 # Jennifer Rein 2011-08-27 05:30 As a massage therapist with formal training more than 2200 hours, do I still need to apply for MTCAP? or I just automatically obtain the status? Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

0 # Nadine Noseworthy 2011-08-29 01:41 Hi Jennifer, with 2200+ hrs you do not need to apply for MTCAP.

Cheers,
Nadine

0 # Kathryn Enns 2011-10-30 07:00 Has there been any update about Manulife not accepting payment requests from clients with only NHPC receipts? I am confused as to some information I have read that we need to be MTAA registered as well??? Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

+2 # Nadine Noseworthy 2011-11-03 05:44 As many of you know, Manulife recently changed their policy so that all NHPC Massage Therapy members in Alberta must also be a member of the MTAA. We are working hard on our members behalf and continue to have discussions with Manulife and expect a positive outcome. To speed up the process of having Manulife reverse their current policy regarding NHPC members, we strongly encourage all NHPC members and their clients to contact Manulife by calling the Manulife Claims Centre at 1.800.268.6195. NHPC members could mention that they understand the Manulife policy for NHPC members is currently under review and request a special exemption until that policy review is complete. Your clients are also encouraged to call Manulife to get more information from Manulife on their change in policy.

Thank you
NHPC

0 # brenda 2011-11-25 04:55 We are covered by Manulife and they recently accepted NHPC massage claims from Alberta but NOT BC. They have explained that the BC therapists must also have an RMT # before they will process the claim. We spoke with our therapist manager in BC and there are at a loss. Unfortunately we will be unable to use their services in the future.
What now?

+1 # Nadine Noseworthy 2011-11-25 08:07 Hi Brenda, BC is a regulated province so to be covered for Massage Therapy you have to be registered with CMTBC.The Manulife reference isn't valid there as its not that same situration as Alberta. You can be a member of NHPC in BC, but to call yourself a Massage Therapist you need 3000 hrs of schooling, and be a member of the College. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

0 # duyen 2012-01-06 02:47 Hi Nadine,

At my work they said as of Jan 2012 Sunlife only reimburses RMT with 2200hrs of training. Is that true or RMT with less than 2200hr with more than 2 years of experience are still approved by Sunlife?

Thanks.
Duyen
