Use of "RMT" in Non-Regulated Provinces

Saskatchewan and Manitoba members of the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada (NHPC) have reported receiving strongly worded correspondence from the Massage Therapy Association of Saskatchewan (MTAS) and the Massage Therapy Association of Manitoba (MTAM) identifying that use of the letters "RMT" must be discontinued under threat of legal action.

At the heart of the issue is the MTAS and MTAM $100 purchase of a “trademark” license from the College of Massage Therapy Ontario (CMTO). NHPC members and other organizations across Canada regularly use terms related to massage therapy including "RMT".

Few jurisdictions in Canada regulate the titles massage therapists may use to describe themselves. Saskatchewan and Manitoba do not regulate the titles that massage therapists may use to describe themselves.

Legal advice and opinion secured by the NHPC states "…in our view the official marks of the CMTO are not valid and enforceable." Therefore, the extended use of the CMTO trademark license by MTAS and MTAM, through license or otherwise, is not valid or enforceable in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

NHPC acknowledges the stress and strain that the MTAS action has caused Saskatchewan members and encourages practitioners to continue with their daily activities as before and maintain contact with their Association.

+3 # Kaitlyn Benn 2011-03-23 00:27 I believe that the MTAM is attempting to create a solid foundation in effort to bring their current standards and regulations up-to-date. I do agree, however, that individuals who have successfully completed their massage program (2200-3000 hours) and their provincial exams do derserve the reservation of RMT. I do think it is unfair that action about the use of 'RMT' is just being implemented now. I can see both ends of the argument. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

+2 # Dale Pierce 2011-04-11 03:18 I think it is so sad that we have so many people in all of these provinces that are so ego-based that they feel the need to "trademark" terms that have been used by others for a long period of time. I feel sorry for those poor people that think that owning those terms makes them massage therapists. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

+1 # Janice Karingten 2011-04-25 03:41 I have been practicing for 20 years in Alberta, and several years ago,( I can't remember when) It was brought to my attention that because we do not have a college in Alberta for massage therapy, no one should use the designation "R" for it means being part of a college like physicians and surgeons belong to. I believe it was the AMTWP that told us that! Since that time I have been using CMT for certified massage therapist, … Until one of my receipts came under question from an insurance co. so I switched back to "R". ! Then there was the case of a therapist in Edmonton who used the name "bodywork" in his business name and tried to stop others from using that word… I agree with the above comment. 0 # Claire Ashton 2011-04-26 01:25 Thank you all for your comments. The term 'Registered Massage Therapist' is legitimately protected by legislation ONLY in those provinces that have elected to regulate Massage Therapy (currently B.C., NFL/LB and Ont,)

In all other ten Canadian provinces and territories, massage therapists can use the title 'Registered Massage Therapist".

0 # Tia Harvey-White 2011-10-13 15:43 I live in alberta now but did my 2200 diploma in manitoba. When I was in school we were told that RMT stands for Remedial Massage Therapist and nobody is entitled (at that time) to use Registered Massage Therapist as massage therapy is not a registered profession…like nursing is and that it why they can legally use Registered Nurses. For some reason no one in Alberta knows that. So my title on my diploma from Massage Therapy College of Manitoba is Advanced Remedial Massage Therapist. NHPC has really taken a beating over all these years and they have really fought hard these past few years to bring up the standards for massage therapy which i really appreciate. I agree that we are all health care providers and need to start working together. I was initially with the MTAM when I graduated and the year I joined they had actually taken the entrance exam away. They are always preaching about high standards but then they took the exam away just to win back the members they lost to NHPC. Reply | Reply with quote | Quote
