What is an Indian Head Massage?

Indian head massage, also known as Champissage, is a treatment that focuses on the upper back, shoulders, upper arms neck, head, face and ears and uses a variety friction and other moves to induce relaxation and as well as to address several common stress related issues: Headaches, migraines, hair loss, insomnia, sinusitis and upper back stiffness and tightness, just to name a few.

It originates from an Indian alternative medicine system called Ayurveda, (translated as the ‘science of life’), whereby it is believed that the mind and body are intricately connected and thus can influence one another. Through this theory, it is understood that Indian head massage can not only reduce headaches and improve physical well-being, but it can also improve mental and emotional wellness too.

Indian head massage is an ancient therapeutic practice that has been used in India for centuries and requires no speical equipment making it a very accessible treatment and perfect for newcomers to massage. It is usually done while seated and through light clothing.

Spa Champissage can also be offered by spas. This is done by enhancing this treatment with a few extras. This is all detailed in class.

This treatment is not fully transferable to the massage table. Some parts of the treatment can be extrapolated and integrated into a massage. This treatment makes for a nice stand alone treatment but also can be a 30 minute add-on to a 60 minute massage treatment.
