In your professional practice as an NHPC member, you are required to:

  • complete and maintain client records
  • complete a preliminary assessment to identify contraindications to services
  • obtain a signed waiver from clients acknowledging disclosure of service limits, contraindications, and potential side-effects
  • adhere to informed consent at all times
  • acquire municipal licensing, if applicable in your jurisdiction
  • advise the NHPC whether you sell products as part of your practice

Associate Membership Limitations (required)

As an Associate member you:

  • are not active in professional practice
  • do not have Professional Liability Insurance through NHPC's program
  • are not on third-party lists for insurance companies as an eligible provider
  • will apply for Regular Membership upon return to professional practice
  • will not practice professionally while you maintain an Associate Membership

Responsibilities of Maintaining Associate Membership (required)

As an Associate member of the NHPC, your responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • notifying the NHPC in writing, within 30 days, of any change of personal or business contact information
  • adhering to NHPC Bylaws and NHPC Code of Ethics
  • complying with the NHPC Continued Competency Program (CCP), which includes maintaining current First Aid/CPR
  • holding your membership in Good Standing
  • understanding that termination of membership can occur as a result of:
    • failure to pay membership fees on time
    • Complaints Resolution Process

Responsibilities of Maintaining Regular Membership (required)

As a member of NHPC, your responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • notifying the NHPC in writing, within 30 days, of any change of personal or business contact information
  • adhering to NHPC Bylaws and NHPC Code of Ethics
  • complying with the NHPC Continued Competency Program (CCP), which includes maintaining current First Aid/CPR
  • advising AON and NHPC if you practice a modality not recognized by NHPC, to arrange Professional Liability Insurance for those practices
    • The NHPC Professional Liability Insurance Program covers only the modalities the NHPC has recognized you to practise and limits coverage as noted in the Operations section in the Liability Program Application below.
  • holding your membership in Good Standing
    • NHPC may notify insurance companies regarding eligibility criteria when your membership is not in Good Standing. This will result in your clients not being reimbursed for your receipts by their insurance company.
  • understanding that termination of membership can occur as a result of:
    • failure to pay membership fees on time
    • non-compliance with the CCP
    • Complaints Resolution Process

Responsibilities of Maintaining Student Membership (required)

As a Student member of the NHPC, your responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • notifying the NHPC in writing, within 30 days, of any change of personal or business contact information
  • adhering to NHPC Bylaws and NHPC Code of Ethics

  • understanding that termination of membership can occur as a result of:
    • failure to pay membership fees on time

Membership Renewal (required)

Your NHPC membership requires an annual renewal. This must be paid in full BEFORE YOUR EXPIRY DATE and include a completed application to renew.

  • If you do not complete your renewal and pay before the expiry date, your membership will not be in good standing, which will effect your clients ability to get their receipts reimbursed.
  • An Arrears Fee will be applied to late renewals.
  • If late renewals are not completed in a specified period of time, your membership will be terminated.
  • Professional liability insurance expires effective 11:59 p.m. of your membership expiry date.
  • Successful renewal prior to expiry date ensures uninterrupted coverage of your Professional Liability Insurance

Student Membership: Important Information for You (required)

As a Student member, you are not on third-party provider lists for insurance companies as an eligible provider. Once you have successfully completed your training program, you may apply for REGULAR membership and be listed as an eligible provider for insurance companies.

As a Student Member, you are able to receive Professional Liability Insurance. You will require this if:

  • your school does not provide insurance for your practicum
  • you practice outside the school practicum

As you enter your professional practice, remember to obtain informed consent at all times and maintain treatment notes and client records.

The NHPC Medical Malpractice insurance component under the Liability Insurance program policy excludes the above practices (those indicated in the Operations section), except as follows:

Insertion of fluids, chemicals or foreign objects into bodily orifices, including colonic irrigations, naturopathy, advice relating to the ingestion of herbs, nutritional supplements, plant medicine or chemical substances, with the exception of bona fide members of the NHPC who were practicing and qualified to perform the above modalities and practices on or prior to July 31, 2001, with credentials acceptable to the NHPC, and who were members insured under policy # MMC9-0001, issued by Scottish & York Insurance Co., Ltd., under the NHPC Professional Liability Insurance Program in force as of July 31, 2001.

The NHPC carries out detailed credentialing of all practising members. In no event are such modalities and practices covered under the Medical Malpractice insurance policy if any such modalities and practices falls outside the defined disciplines, techniques or specialties approved for membership with the NHPC. If you provide any of these excluded services, please contact the NHPC to discuss these.

Liability Insurance Program Limits

Mandatory
Medical Malpractice Liability – $3,000,000 each Claim (Occurrence based), $5,000,000 Annual Aggregate; Legal Expense - $25,000 each Claim, $50,000 Annual Aggregate (applicable to members subject to professional disciplinary legislation).

Pays for claims against the member alleging negligence in the treatment of a patient as a result of the member’s bodywork, resulting in bodily injury, sickness or disease.


Optional
Commercial General Liability (CGL) – $3,000,000 each Occurrence, $5,000,000 Annual Aggregate.

Pays for claims against the member alleging negligence in the operation of the business, causing bodily injury or property damage, including slips and falls, damage to rented or adjacent premises, and injury from products sold.


Note: This policy excludes claims arising out of any service, treatment, advice or instruction for the purpose of appearance or skin enhancement, hair removal or replacement or personal grooming.

Insurance Selection (required)

If you answered "No" to the above questions, you should select Option 1: Medical Malpractice & Commercial General Liability. By selecting Option 2: Medical Malpractice ONLY, in the event of a claim other than Medical Malpractice related claims, you will have no coverage for claims such as those of the type listed under the Commercial General Liability description above.
