Reflexology is growing in popularity as a source of healing, but there are still people who are unaware of the practice and its benefits.

We spoke to three NHPC reflexologists who shared different ways the practice helps their clients.

Pain and Discomfort Associated with Shingles

Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash. While it can occur anywhere on the body, it is most commonly affects the right or left side of the torso.

Tina Carter, owner and founder of Sole to Soul TLC, had a client who was experiencing a high level of pain due to shingles. By focusing on the spine, glands, and diaphragm, using foot reflexology, Tina was able to lessen his pain.

After an additional two sessions, the client reported that the pain and rash associated with the shingles virus were gone. In the words of the client, "reflexology definitely works."

In addition to reflexology, Tina offers clients in Red Deer, AB, treatments in reiki and life coaching. Visit her website if you would like to book an appointment or learn more about Tina and her services.

Injury and Rehabilitation

Many holistic health practitioners work alongside other practitioners, such as physiotherapists, to assist their clients in injury recovery and rehabilitation.

This is the case for NHPC member Vannessa Gover, who practises out of Adam Physio in Edmonton, AB. In her practice, Vannessa treats clients using massage therapy, yoga, reiki, advanced cupping, and reflexology.

Some clients require an alternative treatment to massage therapy when the affected area is not accessible due to acute pain; inflammation; or a strain, sprain, or fracture.

In cases like this, reflexology allows Vanessa to access painful or inaccessible areas indirectly through the feet without causing the client discomfort.

Vannessa explains that reflexology helps increase blood and lymphatic flow, decrease muscular tension, and improve the client's overall state of relaxation. To learn more about Vannessa and the services she offers, you can follow her on Facebook and Instagram.

Pain from a Uterine Fibroid

Hannah McFeetors, an NHPC reflexologist, massage therapist, and cupping and reiki practitioner, had a long-time client who was diagnosed with a large uterine fibroid and was unable to stand straight due to the pain.

Uterine Fibroids are growths found in the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. The client booked a massage therapy treatment to help alleviate some of the pain she was experiencing.

After initial examination and consultation, Hannah decided that massage therapy was not the best treatment for her client, and instead performed a full reflexology session.

During this session she used a technique called "Being With" to further target the abdomen. This technique is used to calm the tissue by gently holding or touching the area while incorporating breathing techniques.

After this combined treatment, which focused on the reproductive, immune, lymphatic, and circulatory system reflexes, the client felt pain-free and was able to stand straight again. The client provided Hannah with a testimonial in which she stated her initial skepticism and the later success of the treatment:

Hannah followed up the reflexology treatment with a mild massage technique on the abdomen. At the end of the session, the pain was gone, absolutely gone! I was very relaxed and could walk normally again. Still skeptical, I monitored my condition and after three days I was still pain free!

Clients visit Hannah at Unity Massage in Winnipeg, MB, follow her on Instagram or send her an email if you have questions about her or the services she offers.

I hope this experience gives someone hope and curiosity to try reflexology or to try it again, as the results may surprise you. Reflexology is a powerful treatment when the body needs it to be, and I am so proud to be able to offer it to my clients.Hannah McFeetors
